“Learning is experience. Everything else is just information.”
― Albert Einstein

The measurement of a human being is measured very limited through the schooling system, the education you receive does come at a cost, it grades you on measurement such as information retention instead of individual creativity, love, general self worth and human being potential, in their GCSE or A level.

The creative aspect of schooling is discredited, its wrong to think outside the box, many of the worlds greatest minds, business leaders, geniuses, quit school and used their creative understanding, determination, desire and inner knowledge on who they are as a person. The schooling system limits the forms of creativity and creates this robot like individual with strict no variant rules. There is this block between school and education, which locks the person into this society the education system is still locked in this Victorian style form of teaching.

The judgement of society begins in school. constantly judgement of being an individual or being an out of the box thinker is disregarded, Albert Einstein once said, everybody is a genius but if you judged a fish in its ability to climb a tree it will spend it’s life being stupid. Many people relate to that fish in the understanding that their self worth is limited because of what they were judged and graded in school. Their Gifts are limited by an institution which doesn’t search for purpose, meaning or desire. The schooling system is supposedly their to prepare us for the future, but ironically seems to be the only thing that hasn’t changed in the last century. It’s time to measure up by our own ability to connect our own dots. Become our own educators, understand our own values, strength, needs and desires.

ADVICE OF THE WEEK

Become bored. Dont just look to fill voids of time with something to do. look to become bored, create time for that inner reflection and take time to understand what it means to be human. In the morning create a 10 minute sit spot. sit with yourself, take a question with you and see what your mind truly thinks of it without any other influence, let your mind run and create your imagination as Einstein once said education can take you from A To Z but imagination can take you everywhere.

I believe educators should do everything they can to encourage children to develop a responsible, loving and caring relationship with the natural and gardened world. In doing so, we help them to understand that our wellbeing is inextricably linked to the rest of the life on Earth.

My life in teaching has been a varied and rich experience and I committed to a lifelong investigation into how children truly learn about the world they inhabit.

Growing up on a traditional farm in Devon offered me a foundation in many practical skills, including animal and plant husbandry. As a young man I spent 11 years in Andalucia, bringing up my own children, building, farming and performing street theatre. I became inspired by the diversity of modes of learning that I witnessed, and developed a yearning to explore a new education.

On returning to the UK, I completed an Education Studies Degree in Steiner Education. My first job as a graduate was teaching science, games and crafts for a year at Bristol Waldorf School where the practical, experiential approach to science excited me. Later, a full time teaching post as a Gardening Teacher at the South Devon Steiner School offered me the opportunity to develop my ideas.

I went on to design an outdoor learning environment that would offer children aged 5 to 16 the opportunity to engage in experiential, land-based activities that supported and catalysed the classroom based content of the curriculum. Collectively these experiences have helped inform the head, heart, hands approach that we’ve developed here at Embercombe.
